I have done Network Marketing since 1977, when it was still called Multi-level Marketing. I cut my teeth on Amway and learned a lot about potential, goal setting, and reaching for dreams. I learned about the spirit soaring and about how awesome it is to see your dreams coming true.
I’ve sat at a dinner table with the most successful people in the field. I’ve also sat in a hotel room with a top money-maker in the business (at the time he had a business worth over $200 million dollars per month). The man looked into my eyes, as if he knew me and my story, and told us how to build our business. We were one couple out of six who had a private invitation for this one-on-one training.
As you can see, I have been trained by the best. I’ve gone to all the meetings, read all the books on the reading list, and listened to all the tapes, videos and CD’s that were available. And I used only my own products as well. I did every thing right. At times I had really great successes, and a few failures too. Everyone who does Network Marketing knows this type of up and down success is just part of doing business in the field of Network Marketing. There is always going to be ups and downs in this field.
The typical expectations of a new Network Marketer is usually unrealistic. However, an upline will not discourage him or her about what’s realistic. Besides, who really knows what’s realistic and what a new associate can do. So upline let people go full-speed ahead and make a big mess of things. Making a big mess is great when a person is motivated and the momentum keeps the person moving.
A big mess is not good if the person makes so many mistakes that it chases people away from him/her and leaves a trail of bad feelings behind from not being trained well enough. This happens when a person gets into a big hurry and does not take the time to be trained properly, especially on how to approach people. We will discuss proper approaches in a later article.
If this sounds like you, let upline help you clean up the mess. That’s the kind of mess uplines love. However, there can be a few problems with making a mess of things.
- The new associate often runs out of steam and bombs out of the business too quickly when he/she doesn’t see the results expected. A new associate doesn’t realize that it takes time for a healthy business to develop. It will take time for things to cure in the business and to create a strong foundation that can withstand the winds of adversity. One can count on adversity and challenges to test a Network Marker’s resolve and the integrity level of a business’ foundation.
- Uplines want you to go out and sponsor the world. They know that many prospective leaders will come from several levels down from them. They also know that you may not stick with the business and drop out. If you leave, guess who gets your future downline leaders?
- Your upline wants you to take training from them only, because they say it causes confusion otherwise. It is true that confusion is often caused between you and your upline and you and your downline when what I teach is different from them. The problem is that upline do not know if what I teach works and have concerns that it may not be duplicatable. That could be a problem for your business. They want to teach you what they believe works. All of that makes sense, but the problem is that what they are teaching comes from old techniques that no longer work in this age of the Internet.
- Upline tell you to duplicate what they teach because your downline will duplicate what you do. Since upline became successful using a specific plan, they want you to follow the plan. The problem is that most uplines became successful using the old system when it was still working. However, that old system no longer works as good as it used to; before the Internet era.
- The old system teaches you to approach your warm contacts (people you know) before approaching people you do not know personally (they are called cold contacts). Sometimes warm contacts work out to be good training for the new associate. They make all the mistakes with them and get used to hearing “No”. If they survive warm contacts, they are ready for making cold contacts. This is the plan that I used with my friends and family, they were patient and let me practice on them. One of my best downline came from a family member by using this approach. Asking them to let you practice means they know you do not know everything and will make mistakes. They also know you are not trying to sponsor them so they do not have their guard up or feel pressured. This is the best way to approach your warm contacts. You can tell them about the new things you learn, what others in the business are doing, and how you feel about the opportunity and products. In other words, all you are doing is sharing your feelings with them. The pressure is off them, and it might surprise you when they say they want to join or use the products.
- One thing that your upline is good at teaching is how to create a business posture that suggests confidence and knowledge. You cannot get that kind of training off the Internet. It takes one-one-one training and associations to gain that type of confidence.
In conclusion, let me assure you that there is a place for Internet training and a place for upline training. There is no reason why they can’t work well together if both teach true principles. It is up to you to check out these plans and make sure that they teach techniques that are based on sound principles and that their associations are reputable.
I do have a system that I use and teach. If you are interested, you can contact me through an email. Send an email to Judy@JudySherman.com
